The Civil War soldiers on this list were residents of Hartland Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Some were residents before the war, some after, and some both before and after. Some acquired permanent posthumous residence in Hartland by being interred in one of its cemeteries. More than 170 men are listed.

Data for 1861-1866 is from History of Livingston County, Michigan (Philadelphia: Everts & Abbott, 1880), pp. 60-120. This data should be used with caution. Men might have been residents of a different township than that for which they are listed. In a letter contained in the Robert Crouse Collection, Robert Findley complained that men recruited from Hartland were being credited to Howell. Thus, this data may be both under-inclusive and over-inclusive: men who lived in Hartland might be credited to a different township, or men who lived in a different township might be credited to Hartland. For example, some men lived in 1860 in Brighton (Charles Goucher, Homer Goucher, George Newberry), in Cohoctah (Elias Durfee), in Deerfield (Myron Southwick), in Howell (Vestall Baker), in Oceola (William Griswold, Ezra Martin, Calvin Murdock, Charles Murdock, Henry Vorce), and in Tyrone (George R. Griswold), yet are credited as 1861-1866 residents of Hartland. Perhaps some indeed lived in Hartland at the time of enlistment. It was common for young men to be employed as farm laborers by another farm family, with room and board being part of their pay. During the Civil War, a farm family might find itself in greater need of such hired labor if its own sons were away at war.

F, 33rd New York Infantry, and (2) Lewis R. [should be K.] Gilbert, Co. D, 85th New York Infantry and Co. F, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry; their post office address was Parshallville, but both lived in Oceola Twp. according to documents in their pension files.

Note 1. In a deposition dated 24 Mar. 1890, William F. Eaton said that "For six or seven years prior to enlistment I resided with my parents in Hartland Township Livingston Co Mich. We lived on a small farm & I worked in the neighborhood at farm work." In an affidavit dated 26 July 1888, Giles Ross of Hartland (with whom Eaton resided in 1880) called him "Frank" Eaton. In a Declaration for pension dated 15 July 1918, William F. Eaton says he resided at Hartland, Livingston Co., Michigan, 1865-1873; Reading, Michigan, 1873-1878; Highland, Oakland Co., Michigan, 1878-Apr. 12, 1911, and the Michigan Soldiers Home since that date. In an earlier Declaration for Pension, 22 May 1912, Eaton provides different information: Livingston Co., Michigan, 1865-1890; Oakland Co., Michigan, 1890-1911; and Kent Co., Michigan, since 1911.

Note 2. Affidavits in his pension file show him in Hartland in 1885; Parshallville, 1890 and 1893. He married, second, in Parshallville, 22 Sept. 1886, to Julia E. Parshall, age 25, of Hartland.

Note 3. In the 1860 census, John Pratt Waste, a medical student, is enumerated in the household of Dr. William McCullar Hayford as "John P. Weste." This was incorrectly transcribed as "John P. Webb" in Kernie L. King, ed., 1860 Federal Census and Mortality Schedule, Livingston County, Michigan (Howell, MI: Livingston County Genealogical Society, third printing, 1997). Dr. Hayford was named for his grandfather, Rev. William McCullar.

Note 4. Coe's pension file contains an affidavit dated 12 July 1900, by Sarah A. Jacobs, age 63, of Bancroft, Michigan, which states that Coe came to Brighton, Michigan, about 1852 from New York State in company with Jackson Coe [his brother]; that Coe lived with Jacobs' father's family in Brighton from 1852 until 1854; that Coe moved with Jacobs' father's family to Hartland in 1854 and lived with them until he enlisted in the War of the Rebellion; after Coe returned from the war he married his first wife, Emma Willis, also known as Emma Stewart; that Coe and his first wife lived with Jacobs' father's family for some time [unspecified]; and that Coe's first wife died in 1874 or 1875. An affidavit by James Coe, dated 2 March 1881, indicates he resided at Fenton, Genessee Co., Mich from 1865 to 1871; then at Detroit until 1876; then in Fenton Co., Mich until January 1881. Subsequently, he resided at the National Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio, and later in New York State, where he died.

Note 5. The pension file for the minor children of George R. Griswold is indexed under Frederick S. Griswold, apparently due to confusion by Pension Office personnel. There is no pension index card for George R. Griswold himself. On 8 April 1864, the Livingston County Probate Court appointed Frederick S. Griswold, age 56, guardian of the minor children of George R. Griswold; after Frederick's death, the court on 12 Mar. 1865 appointed Martin V. Russell as guardian. George R. Griswold is referred to as being "of Hartland" both (1) in the Probate Court's appointment of Frederick S. Griswold as guardian and (2) in the record of the 31 Oct. 1851 marriage of George Griswold, age 24, of Hartland, to Nancy Griswold, age 18, of Osceola.

Note 6. Letters from this man are included in the Robert Crouse Collection, Civil War Military Collections, Michigan Historical Collections (MHC), at the Bentley Historical Library, 1150 Beal Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-2113, which is part of the University of Michigan.

Note 7. T288 shows name as Pheroas P. Chambers, but he clearly wrote his own name as Pheroras.

Note 8. Alvin N. Hale and Sanford S. Hale, ages 25 and 14, respectively, on the 1860 census of Hartland, enlisted as Alvin/Elvin N. Hale and Sandford S./Sanford L. Hale, ages 29 and 19, respectively, at Highland (Elvin) and Milford (Sandford) in Aug. 1862 and deserted 18 Oct. 1862 from Detroit. The Provost Marshal never apprehended them.

Note 9. John Beaumont identified himself as a resident of Hartland in an affidavit dated 15 Feb. 1884 in Elisha Griswold's pension file. In Beaumont's own pension file, his Declaration for Pension, dated 21 Feb. 1907, indicates he had resided from 1882 to 1886 in Livingston County, but does not specify which township.

Note 10. Samuel Sayers enlisted at Hartland, 20 Oct. 1861, by Q. Foster; reenlisted 1 Jan. 1864; arrested at Hartland, 1 or 2 June 1864, his furlough having expired on 22 or 28 May 1864; he had remained in Hartland because he "was taking care of Lieut. of Same Batt. who is sick." After his honorable discharge at Vicksburg, MS, 31 Dec. 1863, he returned to Hartland to reside until about 1867. An affidavit in Sayers' pension file by William Lousbury, dated 16 May 1887, indicates "That in the spring of 1867 I worked for Samuel Sayers ... who had moved from Hartland, Michigan to Maple Grove, Michigan...."

Note 11. Freeman Mapes of Hartland was drafted but avoided military service by procuring Christian Rupert [Ruppert] to serve as his substitute. Rupert was probably not a Hartland resident but his enlistment was "credited to Hartland" since he served in place of Mapes.

Note 12. Henry S. Chapin of Fenton was drafted but avoided military service by procuring Edward M. Seaman [Seamen] to serve as his substitute. Seaman [Seamen] was "credited to Fenton" since he served in place of Chapin.

Note 13. Alexander McPherson of Howell was drafted but avoided military service by procuring Wallace S. Waterman to serve as his substitute. Waterman was "credited to Howell" since he served in place of McPherson.

Note 14. John H. Stevens' CMSR indicates he received a severe gunshot wound to the right thigh at the Battle of Gettysburg, 2 July 1863, and returned to his home in Hartland until sometime in Oct. 1863. Stevens' pension file adds more details. In an affidavit dated 6 Oct. 1898, John N. Weaver said his father, C. A. Weaver, kept a hotel at Hartland from 1854 to 1869, except for the period April 1861 to April 1862, and that John H. Stevens "did make his home at said Hotel previous to his enlistment and was there during a good share of his time while wounded and that he came back there when he received his discharge from the Army in 1865. ... [Stevens] staid ... untill the next summer ... until he moved to East Tawas, Mich. to live...." In an affidavit dated 6 Oct. 1898, Mary J. Stevens, wife of Charles H. Stevens [John's brother], said that John H. Stevens returned from the Army in 1865 and "made it his home at Hartland for some time after his discharge ... and was at my house very often...."

Note 15. In an affidavit dated 20 Jan. 1885, Levi Maxfield stated: "That he lived in Hartland, Livingston Co., Mich., from one year old till two years before enlistment, then in Highland, Oakland Co., Mich., till enlistment. That since discharge he lived in said Highland till Dec. 1881, when he moved to Owosso [Shiawassee Co., Mich.]."

Note 16. Morris D. Brainard of Hartland was drafted but avoided military service by procuring John Dubois, apparently a resident of Pontiac, Michigan, to serve as his substitute. Dubois was "credited to Hartland" since he served in place of Brainard.

Note 17. William Peck Holdridge was born in Macomb, Michigan; he was credited to Holly, Michigan, upon his re-enlistment, 19 Jan. 1864.

Note 18. Orley D. Knapp's enlistment paper in his CMSR shows he was credited to White Lake Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, upon his enrollment, 5 Jan. 1864, when he was 28 [sic]. His widow, Hannah, applied for a widow's pension and minor's pension on behalf of their two children. On 10 Oct. 1866, she married Leonard L. Gue, a veteran of Co. F, 4th Michigan Infantry; Co. G, 1st Michigan Infantry; and Co. C, 6th Veterans Reserve Corps, at which point her own pension would have ceased. She applied for a widow's pension after Gue's death in 1896. At that point (most likely) the Pension Office combined the papers from the "Orley D. Knapp pension file" (MC 100,319 according to T288 and T289) with the "Leonard Gue pension file" (WC 467,578). By way of explanation, pension papers for a veteran, his widow(s) and minor children (if any) were kept by the Pension Office as one file. Over time, however, the file number would change depending upon the type of pension and its status. [At a future date, I will add an explanation of the pension numbering system to this page.] The index cards in T288 and T289 relating to Orley D. Knapp do not indicate the consolidation of "his" file with Gue's file, and there is no cross-reference card among the pension files.

Note 19. Martin Chrispell was 18 years old when he enlisted, so he needed his father's signed consent on his enlistment form, which also provides evidence of Martin's residence at Hartland in 1864: "I, James Chrispell of Tyrone, Livingston Co., do certify that I am the Father of Martin Chrispell; that the said Martin Chrispell is eighteen years of age; and I do hereby freely give my consent to his volunteering as a soldier in the Army of the United States for the period of three years and that the said Martin Chrispell is a resident of Hartland and I consent to his being credited to said Town of Hartland. Given at [blank] the fifth day of January A.D. 1864 (signed) James Chrispell (witness:) Henry P. Crouse."

Note 20. Edward N. Clark of Hartland was drafted but avoided military service by procuring John Maudlin to serve as his substitute. Maudlin was "credited to Hartland" since he served in place of Clark. Maudlin's CMSR is filed under Mandling because the enlisting officer's "u" in Maudlin looks like an "n" and he added a "g" to the end of the surname, then crossed it out. Maudlin himself signed by mark. In an affidavit in John Maudlin's pension file, dated 4 Sept. 1901, John Woods [of Hartland, and of Co. B, 15th Michigan Infantry], identifies himself as the brother of John Maudlin's widow, Sarah Adelaide (Woods) Maudlin.

Note 21. In an affidavit in his pension file dated 31 Jan. 1881, Edward Hopper said that "during the five years preceeding his enlistment he resided in the township of Hartland ... and ... was engaged in the occupation of farming. That when he was discharged from the army he returned to said town of Hartland and continued to reside there until about the month of January 1873 when he removed to the township of Tyrone in said county of Livingston and resided there two years, when he removed to the township of Chesaning, Saginaw county, Michigan, where he has continued to reside until the present time...."

Note 22. George H. Cook of Hartland was drafted but avoided military service by procuring Benjamin L. Cook [his younger brother] to serve as his substitute. In a letter to the pension office, 21 Nov. 1887, Benjamin Cook said "My post office address has been Hartland Livingston Co., Mich., up till 1881, since 1881 it has been Birch Run, Saginaw Co., Mich."

Note 23. John Scollon of Hartland was drafted but avoided military service by procuring Henry R. Massey to serve as his substitute. Massey was "credited to Hartland" since he served in place of Scollon. His CMSR is filed and indexed under "Massey" but his pension is indexed under "Massy."

Note 24. William M. Horton's Declaration for Pension, dated 20 May 1912, indicates "he was born Livingston Co., 1843, at Hartland" and that following the war he lived at Oceola, Dec. 1865 to Aug. 1870; Rockford, Mich., Aug. 1870 to Sept. 1871; Fowlersville, Mich., 1871 to 1912. In an affidavit dated 30 Dec. 1912, Lewis Cobley writes "that He has this Day Examined the Family Bible of the Late John G. Horton Father of William M. Horton In Whose Custody the said Bible now is. That the Bible was Published at Hartford (no state) by D. F. Robinson and H. F. Summers In 1834 and Therein I find the Name of William McKendree Horton Born Sept 8 1843 and there are no erasures or alterations in the Records which are very much faded and appear to have been made many years ago."

Note 25. Edward Lansing "of Hartland Mich." enlisted at Hartland, 26 Jan. 1864, according to the enlistment paper in his CMSR. He never reported for duty and was "dropped from rolls as deserter, Nov. 24, 1864," but was never apprehended.

Note 26. Lucius Cleveland was arrested 20 March 1865, at Hartand as a deserter. "Says he had a furlough to leave at Chattanooga to go to his home in Van Buren Co. Mich. dated June 16, [18]64 & failed to report at expiration of furlough." Records in the CMSR indicate the furlough was extended a number of times. He rejoined his company 21 May 1865, and apparently the matter was resolved as he mustered out with his company at Louisville, Kentucky, 25 July 1865.

Note 27. The pension file for William H. [Henry?] Harrison Wilmarth does not appear to be in NARA custody; it cannot be located under the index number shown in T288 and T289 (SO 42,008). According to his CMSR, he enlisted at Oakland, Michigan, 19 Aug. 1861, age 20.

Note 28. Henry Slocum enlisted and mustered in 3 June 1864 at Jackson, Michigan, but died 9 July 1864 the Post [military] Hospital at Jackson due to "pneumonia typohoides" before having an opportunity to join his regiment. His foster mother, Harriett Montgomery, received and signed a receipt for Henry's personal property on 11 July 1864, consisting of 1 cap, 1 uniform jacket, 1 blouse, 1 pair rowsers, 3 flannel shirts, 1 pair boots, 2 pairs socks, 1 blanket, 1 pocket book, 1 vest, 1 house wife [sic], 1 silver watch, and $5.00.

It is possible Henry originally joined in 1863. One of the cards in the CMSR indicates that "Henry Slocumb" [sic] was arrested at Hartland, July 21, 1863 [sic], but was not charged. Henry got "released" by request of his foster mother who wrote a letter to the military authorities on July 26 [year not indicated]. Her spelling and capitalization are retained, but punctuation has been added:

I asked him for auten but he said that he was not muster in and was now nead of any he was Catnap and Caried away. the boy was not but forteean and help. he was pursuaid off by boyes. So send him hom with out troble. I am awidoe and heis lusen time in the harvest. Harriet montgomery. Henry Slocum is the boy. you see by my riten that I am I fift years oald and am not well.

Dear Sir: It is with a good deal of embarrassment not being used to such business, but I am a lone woman and no one to do for me. I have had two brother die in this war and I am left all alone but [for] this little boy, he is all I got. I am his guardian and [foster] mother. His father is dead and [he is] motherless. I left him [in Michigan] last winter on a visit to Indiana and the first [time] I heard he had enlisted I came right back to Mount Clemons and asked the Colonel to give him up. I asked him often but he said that he [Henry] was not mustered in and was now needed [or not needed?]. He was kidnapped and carried away. The boy was not but fourteen [sic] and helpless. He was pursuaded by boys. So send him home without trouble. I am a widow and he is losing time in the harvest. (signed) Harriet Montgomery. Henry Slocum is the boy. You see by my writing that I am fifty years old and am not well.

The reverse side of this note has the endorsement, "Discharged by Col. Smith, July 29, 1863 [sic], belonged to 8 Cav."

Note 29. Sanford E. House, son of Amasa G. House, indicates in two Declarations for Pension, dated 20 May 1912 and 20 May 1914, that he was born in Hartland, 20 May 1848. He also indicates this on a Form 3-389 (a standard questionnaire about his birth, marriage(s), and children), completed 7 May 1915.

Note 30. In an affidavit dated 2 Sept. 1885, James Kirk says "that from period of Discharge in 1864 to 1875, his residence was in Brooklyn, N.Y. and his occupation was that of a laborer. In 1875 he removed to Hartand...." In an affidavit dated 6 Aug. 1885, he says, "since leaving the service [he] has resided in the city of Brooklyn N.Y. and in Oceola, state of Michigan...." and that his current "residence and Post office address is Hartland...." In the 6 Aug. 1885 affidavit he says that "at 2d Bull Run Battle Va. the 87th N.Y. vols was cut to peices, taken prisioner & the survivors were consolidated with the 40th New York Infty...."

Note 31. The CMSR for Philip Welch/Welsh/Walsh is filed under the name Philip Welch, and indicates he was not assigned to any company in the 3rd Michigan Cavalry. His pension file indicates assignment to Company I.

Note 32. Further research is necessary to verify if this Orlando Hutchinson is the same as Orlando Huchinson, age 6, of Hartland in 1850. The CMSR for this man indicates his age inconsistently as 27 and as 19. He enrolled at Flint, 2 Mar. 1863, and died of pneumonia as a POW either at Andersonville or in a Richmond, Va., hospital, 15 Oct. 1863.

Note 33. In T288, George Ryness' mother's name is given as Patsey Woodcock, but all records in the file, as well as her own signature, show her name to be Betsey.

Note 35. This man clearly signed his name as Henry C. Andrus, but his CMSR was filed under Henry C. Andrews. Records in the CMSR report his surname as Andrews, Andress, and Andrus. Although "credited to Hartland" he lived in Highland, Michigan, until 1883, then in Brown Co., South Dakota.

Note 38. There were two men in the 1st Michigan Light Artillery named John G. Williams; the man in Battery G survived the war and lived in Muir, Ionia Co., Michigan, 1892-97. The Hartland man, in Battery H, enlisted 12 Sept. 1864, but never saw active duty with his unit; he returned home sick and died of "tuberculousus consumption" at his parents' home in Hartland, 8 May 1865.

Recruiting at Hartland

During the war, recruiting and enlisting of men occurred at thousands of towns across the North, including at Hartland. Some of the Hartland men who served were enrolled at Hartland, but most enrolled at Howell, Jackson, Fenton, or elsewhere. Some of the men who enrolled at Hartland were actually residents of other townships and may, as a result, be shown as "from Hartland" on some published or internet lists.

This section lists men who enrolled at Hartland by date, then by name. Comments on their place of residence will be included if available. The dates of enrollment and places of residence are usually from the man's compiled military service record or, sometimes, from his pension file.

Corrections!

Sometimes published sources contain errors. This is the case with the old transcript done many years ago (1950) by members of the Daughters of the American Revolution of gravestones in Griswold Cemetery published as "Griswold Cemetery," in Michigan DAR GRC Report, Series 1, Vol. 233: Rural Cemeteries of Livingston County, Michigan, Vol. 3, which is found in the DAR Library, Washington, DC, and elsewhere.

In the 1950 DAR Griswold Cemetery transcript, there is an entry for this gravestone: "Doct. Major Curtis died Aug 11, 1861 aged 25Yrs 5Mo" and the transcript alleges Civil War service. However, Emma Winegarner re-read this gravestone in November 2005 and found that the age was actually 75 years, 5 months. The stone next to it read, "In Memory of / Ana B / wife of Major Curtis / died Aug 22, 1839 / Agd 53Yrs." It therefore appears that "Doct. Major Curtis" was probably a War of 1812 veteran.
