The Giving Family:
Raising Our Children to Help Others

New Book Teaches How to Raise a Generous Child
Offers Families Tools to Teach Children the “Art of Giving"

Did you know that teenagers in the United States spend $141 billion a year? With consumerism at an all-time high, author Susan Price has written a guide to help parents teach children, from toddlers to teens, how to use their time, talent, and, yes, money to help others.

In her new book, “The Giving Family: Raising Our Children to Help Others,” Price explains how parents, teachers, religious leaders and other adults can instill the spirit of giving and volunteering in children. Through scores of inspired ideas and real stories, she provides specific tips, exercises and resources that are easy to use in any home.

“The Giving Family can start children on the fulfilling journey toward generosity,” said Dorothy S. Ridings, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “It is a reader-friendly, practical and upbeat way for families to get their children excited about philanthropy in America.”

It’s never too early – or too late – to start teaching children the habit of giving, whatever the family’s financial circumstances. This useful how-to guide for parents with children ages five to 18 highlights the importance of exposing kids to philanthropy and volunteerism, and includes age-appropriate examples.

A teenager from Washington, DC inspired her classmates to raise more than $15,000 to ship supplies to Kosovo refugees. Families pick crops left after the harvest for food banks. Sisters and brothers put part of their allowance into a “family foundation” and, around the dinner table, decide how to donate their money.

Susan Crites Price is the co-author, with her husband, Tom, of “The Working Parents Help Book” (Peterson's, 1994, rev. ed., 1996), a guide to juggling kids and careers, which won a Parents' Choice Award and was a selection of the Scholastic Book Club. She is also the co-author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Child Safety” (Macmillan, 2000). Price has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including Oprah and the Today Show, and she co-wrote the weekly "Working Parents Lifeline" column distributed by the New York Times Service.

A freelance writer for the last 15 years, Price has authored articles for Working Mother, Family Life, The Washington Post and Washingtonian. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband and 15-year-old daughter.
