The stone,
affectionately and appropriately named Serenity, carefully placed in the
interior garden embodies the concepts of balance, simplicity and harmony
between outside and inside.
|
Program:
- Create
a unity between garden and home by bringing the outside in. Interior
and exterior spaces should be enjoyed together.
- Create
living and dining areas that feel spacious, not large.
- Create
a first floor master bedroom suite that can share the elements
of the public spaces and gardens, while still able to be intimate
and private.
- Maintain
the streetscape in the established northwest D.C.neighborhood.

Design
Intent:
- The
series of spaces should be simple and balanced, yet the forms and deliberate
placement of colors can be joyfully capricious.
- Using
windows as frames, create layered views - from room to room, inside
to outside. The new living room wall becomes a line of Leyland cypress
trees in garden.
- Use
the hearth as pivot, zen 'dry garden' as center.
- Master
bathroom is black and white to create a backdrop for plants and the
cascading form of the cherry vanity, the harmony of simple forms with
warmth and whimsy.
