My Trip to Jordan--Petra
This is al-Kazneh ("the Treasury"), so named because it was though
to hold various treasures. It was either the residence for the
king of the Nabataeans or a monumental tomb for one of them.
The Nabataens came to the area from the Arabian penninsula around
the 600-500 BC and they inhabited Petra until about 700-800 AD.
The monuments
were virtually all carved into the the rock formations
You can see the indentations on the sides that were apparently
used by the workers to climb up and work on the carving.
