Who are we?
Northern Virginia Genealogy has been providing genealogical information to subscribers since our inception in 1996. Our mission is to publish information that is not otherwise available through microfilm or other publications. Sometimes we find items of interest that are buried in old or little-known sources. In those instances, the editors make a case-by-case decision as to whether or not the information should be reprinted.
What information do we publish?
Annual publications include abstracts or transcriptions of information from court cases, wills, deeds, Bibles, cemetery headstones, church records, tax lists, order books, obituaries, military documents, etc. We solicit new genealogies about families from this area.
Meet the Editors
Editor: Ms. Marty Hiatt, a Certified Genealogical Records Specialist (CGRSSM) since 1991, is the founder and editor of Northern Virginia Genealogy. She is a professional genealogist who specializes in the families and records of Northern Virginia. Her area of expertise includes the counties of Clarke, Fairfax, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun, Prince William; the District of Columbia; Frederick County, Maryland; Jefferson and Berkeley Counties, West Virginia.
Marty researches at local libraries, courthouses, the National Archives, DAR Library, and Library of Congress. As a hobby, she transcribes old cemetery headstones.
Assistant Editor: Ms. Nancy Upshaw is a professional genealogist with more than 16 years of experience using Northern Virginia records. Her personal interests are in Fauquier, Prince William, Stafford, King George and their parent/adjoining counties, but her research has taken her into all the Northern Virginia Counties, as well as Charles County, Maryland and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. All her maternal and paternal lines are in Virginia before 1800.
She also brings with her a previous background in database management, software quality assurance and publications editing, which will aid her in her work on Northern Virginia Genealogy and its web site. Ms. Upshaw will also make contributions to the content of the magazine.
Publication Contributors
Contributors to each issue are typically genealogists who have significant experience researching in Northern Virginia. These genealogists are familiar with records that are “hidden gems.”
