Championship Titles
Bench Champion:
This title is awarded to dogs that have been judged by a minimum of three
different judges at three different shows and has accumulated 15 points.
Each point is awarded when the dog has won over other dogs of their gender.(i.e.
all of the males/females that are not champions will compete in classes
(puppy, bred-by-exhibitor, novice, American-bred, open). Each winner of
their respective class then competes with the other class winners for Winners
Dog/Bitch. Depending upon how many dogs/bitches are defeated, will determine
the number of points awarded. No more than 5 points can be awarded at any
given show. 2 major wins (3 points or better) must be included in the total
points in order to obtain a championship.
Dogs are judged in their conformation. All aspects (type of head, tail,
ears, coat, etc.) of the breed's unique qualities are taken into consideration.
Anatomical structure for each breed is different and judges must familiarize
themselves with every breed they judge. These qualities are taken into
consideration and no placement is given if the judge deems the entrant
of less than breeding quality.
Field Champion and Obedience:
This title is given when a dog acquires 10 points for performance in the
field. They must compete under a minimum of three different judges at three
different trials. Each point is awarded when a dog has won over other dogs
(regardless of gender). This is a competition for the dogs' ability to
perform as a working dog. The breed standards do not apply as for the bench
champion, only that the dog must be pure-bred. Depending on how many dogs
are defeated will depend on the number of points won. Dogs may compete
in more than one class and may win points from each class. This title involves
years of training and a deep rapport between dog and master.
Dual Champion:
A dog receives the title of Dual Champion when he has completed both his
Bench Championship and his Field Championship. At this time AKC does not
give a dual championship if a dog has finished both Bench and Obedience.
This is something that I feel should be awarded to the companion breeds
that are registered.
D.C. Scanpoint's
Touch O'Troll was the first AKC Pointer to achieve this title in 1987.
Following in his footsteps was DC/Amateur
Field CH. Scanpoint's MacKenzie...
