"User's manual for lidar target simulator," National Institute of Standards and Technology Publication, NISTIR 6418, March 2000. With some help, I designed the simulator and wrote the software that runs it. The simulator is used around the world.

A book review of Physics-based vision: principles and practice ; the review appeared in Color Research and Application 18(3):221-223, 1993.

"Light source area, shading, and glare," presented at the 1990 meeting of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Journal of the IES 20(2):29-36 (Summer 1991).

"Light source size and the stimulus to vision," Topical Meeting on Applied Vision, 1989 Technical Digest Series , Vol. 16, (Optical Society of America, Washington, D.C. 1989) pp.176-179. A short summary of my results on light-source size.

"Lighting quality and light source size," Journal of the IES 19(2):142-148 (Summer 1990).

"Veiling reflections," in Proceedings of Symposium to Honor Gordon Heath , (Indiana University, 1988), pp. 125-143.

"Effect of veiling reflections on vision of colored objects," Journal of the IES 18(2):10-15 (Summer 1989). This article relates the level of veiling reflections to the desaturation of colors and the loss in the range of colors that can be seen.

"Lights of New York harbor," National Bureau of Standards Interagency Report, NBSIR 88-3807, June 1988. This report describes a project to measure the intensity of the background lights (mostly streetlights on shore) seen across the water around New York Harbor at night. The report describes the apparatus, the software, and the principles of photometry involved. It also gives data and some analysis.

"Calculation of metameric reflectances," Color Research and Application 13(2): 76-84 (April 1988). This article describes a method for designing spectral reflectance functions to show metamerism, or not to show it as the case may be. The method gives new insight as well as a simple working method.

"Geometry and amplitude of veiling reflections," Journal of the IES 19(1):49-62 (1989); presented at the August 1988 meeting of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. This article deals with two aspects of the veiling reflections problem, through simple models. The first section deals with luminaire size, and the fact that as the luminaire gets larger, it becomes harder to keep from seeing its reflection in reading material. The second section deals with the case where the luminaire image is seen, and relates the washing-out of blacks to the luminaire's size.
