Philosophy

The Montessori method of education, which originated in the early 1900's, has emerged as an approach to human development respected around the world. Dr. Maria Montessori observed that children are born with an inner need to search for experiences that enable them to actively construct their own beings.

Dr. Montessori recognized and described the "sensitive periods" occurring between the ages of 2 1/2 and 6 years; when a child can most easily acquire skills such as spoken and written language, social behaviors, precise coordination, and sensory awareness. She also called attention to the "absorbent mind," which enables young children to take in all their experiences.

Montessori classrooms are designed to respond to the children's sensitive periods, with adults guiding them in directions appropriate to their readiness and maturity. Because young children acquire knowledge by manipulating actual objects the classroom materials embody clear ideas. They encourage repetition, are sequential and multi-sensory, leading eventually to abstract concepts.

Goals

Intellectual goals include the development of perceptual, listening, verbal, mathematical, and reasoning skills.

In the social realm, we encourage children to develop a joy in and a respect for others and to value friendship and courtesy. We also provide multicultural experiences to foster an interest in the larger world, and we try to create an understanding of non-violent solutions to human problems.

We stress the development of initiative, self-confidence, independence, and the ability to concentrate and complete a task. Accomplishing real tasks and challenges develops self esteem as well as fine and large motor skills.

Daily Activities

Each day children pursue their learning in various areas.

  1. Our program includes practical life exercises (such as pouring, buttoning, and polishing) that develop order, concentration, coordination, and independence.
  2. Sensory experiences, including a variety of art activities, help children to compare and classify their perceptions.
  3. Montessori materials such as sandpaper letters and number rods develop reading and math skills.
  4. Science and geography are "hands on" experiences.
  5. Each day also includes group time during which music, foreign language, and books provide cultural enrichment.
  6. Children additionally enjoy a period of outdoor activity, playing on the large playground and engaging in gardening and other enriching activities.

Children are encouraged to choose their own activities and are guided by the teachers to achieve new goals in each area. The staff collaborates in tailoring the program to meet the developmental needs and learning patterns of each individual child, to help the child grow in confidence, self-reliance, and knowledge.

Montessori principles and goals are integrated into the entire day and each activity. The resulting consistency and dependability provide the children with the security and confidence they need to continue their exploration of learning through their entire day.
